“Science doesn’t care what you believe” – One of my favourite t-shirts
I posted the above photo on my Instagram a little over a week ago, with the caption “The best thing about empirically tested objective evidence and hard facts is that they continue to be true, regardless of your opinion.”
It wasn’t directed at any one topic in particular, it broadly applies to so many… everything from the anti-vaxxer movement, to flat Earthers, to climate change deniers, to the “alternative facts” consistently spewing forth from a certain political administration… But it could easily be applied to the mixed reactions we’re seeing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This isn’t a science experiment and I don’t want to make light of the very real threat, but you have to admit, you can compare the different attitudes and reactions of national leaders and government officials and see how that relates to the efficacy in containing the spread in their respective countries.
For example, South Korea did an amazing job at containing the outbreak by testing early and tracing the activities of those infected, compared to another nation that had their first outbreak on the same day as South Korea, and did…. well, next to nothing, for months. It’s nice to see a sharp turn-around in that attitude now, and see (most) people acting responsibly and listening to the experts. It helps to put me at ease as so many people I care about live in the USA, and that includes so many of you as well! Hopefully we can all get through this sooner rather than later, and get back to our regular lives and routines in the coming weeks/months.
Canada is also responding more slowly than we should be, a lot of people are doing the “social distance” thing and we do have testing available, but there aren’t enough preventative measures in place here in my city – and there likely will not be, as officials seem to want to wait for community spread to be rampant in our province before they react with a lock down, like they have done in the province of Ontario. So, I guess time will tell…
I hope all of you are keeping safe during this time, I’d be interested to hear in the comment section how things are going in your country/state/province and what the general attitude is like in your area. I find it more interesting to hear from individual people than to look at statistical data (although the science nerd in me likes that, too ), so I look forward to hearing from you!
Anyway, enough rambling on… here are some more photos from this scene! You can view all 104 pictures at AndiLand.com if you’d like to see more!
So much purple….
What’s so funny?
